Japan quake causes long-lasting stress in dogs - Research compared abandoned dogs rescued from Fukushima with non-disaster affected dogs abandoned in 2009 and 2010, before the earthquake.

TROPICAL STORMS -
In the Atlantic -
- Tropical storm Patty , the season's 16th storm, was located about 255 mi [415 km] NE of the central Bahamas. Patty had top winds of 40 miles (65 kilometers) per hour. It is unlikely that Patty will reach the Bahamas as a tropical storm and therefore no watches or warnings are in effect for those islands. Forecasters expect the storm will be short-lived.

In the Western Pacific -
Typhoon 22w (Prapiroon) was located approximately 400 nm south of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan.

Tropical storm kills 23 in southeast Bangladesh - 1500 missing. A violent tropical storm pounded coastal districts in southeast Bangladesh Thursday, killing at least 23 people. More than 1,000 fishermen who were fishing in the deep sea were still missing. At least 1500 mud, tin and straw-built houses were also levelled in the storms that swept Bhola, Hatiya and Sandwip Islands and half a dozen coastal districts after midnight local time.
At the worst-hit island of Hatiya, at least five people were killed after they were buried under their houses or hit by fallen trees. More than 1000 houses were flattened. "More than 100 fishing trawlers, each carrying at least 10 fishermen, have been missing since the storm." It was ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL STORMS IN DECADES. Many fishermen are expected to have taken shelter in other remote islands in the Bay of Bengal or in the neighbouring Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest. (photo)

SPACE WEATHER -

ADVANCING SUNSPOTS - For the past two weeks, solar activity has been relatively low. Now, a change is in the offing. The farside of the sun is peppered with sunspots, and some of them are beginning to turn toward Earth. Underlying each nest of glowing magnetic loops is a dark sunspot that poses a threat for solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of M-class solar flares and a 5% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours.
A coronal mass ejection hit Earth's magnetic field on Oct. 8th, sparking a dramatic display of Arctic lights that is only now subsiding three days later. More lights could appear on Oct. 14-15. That's when a stream of solar wind spewing from a hole in the suns atmosphere (a "coronal hole") is expected to reach Earth, possibly sparking geomagnetic storms when it arrives.
Another newly discovered Asteroid, 2012 TM79, passed by earth within 0.2 Lunar Distances - that one on Oct. 9th. As previously reported, Asteroid 2012 TC4 will pass by earth within 0.2 Lunar Distances today.
